It would seem that the Royal wedding on Friday 29th has done wonders for the monarchy’s reputation, especially in New Zealand.

A poll in 2005 revealed that nearly 60% of people expected the monarchy to be dumped by New Zealand within 20 years, and only 29% thought it would or should be retained. New figures following last weeks wedding has shown those figures almost reversed, with over 50% expecting the monarchy to be retained by New Zealand and a much lower 33% expecting it to be dumped. The same poll also shows that 58% of New Zealanders are in favour of the monarchy, with just 29% opposing them.

Prince William visited tornado stricken Christchurch earlier in the year and also met with the families of the 29 miners who were killed in the Pike River disaster. This has led to a surge in his popularity with the New Zealand people.

The wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton has been met with great enthusiasm amongst young New Zealanders and the Prime Minister, John Key, states that the wedding has revived a love for the monarchy and that he felt that “any New Zealanders support the retention of the royal family as the head of state.”
