A travel writer has praised the northern French city of Lille after spending 48 hours exploring the region, which could interest those heading for a holiday to a property in France.

Writing for the Independent, Helen Pickles said that the city is "compact, cultured and festive" at this time of year and highlighted the wide range of activities on offer in the region, including visits to the large Christmas markets.

The markets boast around 80 chalet stalls and visitors can also take a trip on the big wheel in Main Square.

Those planning to head for a break to a property in France could find the country easy to get to, with Ms Pickles pointing out that to travel to Lille by Eurostar Brits need only fork out around £55 for a return trip.

Once in Lille, she recommends a trip to the Vieux Lille a "collection of narrow streets" which she said are "lined with gorgeously decorated 17th and 18th-century buildings".
