Pop star Madonna joins the ever-growing club of celebrities wowed enough by Italy’s culture and lifestyle to want a home there.

The legendary singer has reportedly been looking at a multi-million-euro penthouse apartment overlooking a square on the market in Verona, Tuscany’s so-called “City of Love”. Leonardo di Caprio already owns in Verona, while Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie own a mansion not far away in the hills of the Valpolicella wine-growing area. Still in the north of Italy, George Clooney was seen entertaining friends and fellow stars of the big screen at his Lake Como villa around the time of the Venice Film Festival in August.

Not all celebs are drawn to Italy’s more expensive and chic northern areas. Actor Colin Firth’s wife is from Umbria, where the family has a home near Montone, famous for its film festival organised by Monty Python star Terry Gilliam, also a homeowner there, while Dame Helen Mirren has a restored castle in Puglia, the heel of Italy’s boot.

Property in Puglia is especially affordable. The region is known for its “trulli”, cylindrical character homes made of stone, but a villa in the countryside with an acre or two of land can be purchased for less than £100,000. Search Rightmove Overseas’s listings for more examples of Italian homes.
