The first quarter of 2011 has proved to be a good one for Jamaica’s crop production. January to March saw the highest domestic crop production in 11 years, and it was 24.4% higher than the same quarter for 2010.

The increase in production has mean that the agricultural sector in Jamaica has also grown, by 14% overall. This is a fantastic achievement, and means that produce sold within the country and abroad is at an all time high.

Farmers have been working hard; productivity has been on the increase too, with more acreage of land being used for crop production. Dr Christopher Tufton, minister for Agriculture in Jamaica said that the increase in crop production was due to the fantastic weather conditions and programmes enforced by the ministry to gain these results and promote crop production.

Dr Tufton added that the increase in production was good news both for local people and also Jamaica’s tourism industry. Tourists and locals alike are in agreement that produce is of a higher quality and is gaining consistency.

Dr Tufton commends the farmers and the Rural Agricultural Development Authority, who have “provided critical extension and technical support in introducing best practices.”
