Annual policies should still be available for older people heading to property in SpainOlder Britons with property in Spain should still find they are catered for by the travel insurance market, in spite of figures from consumer watchdog Which?.

The organisation surveyed the insurance sector and claimed that elderly travellers face restricted access to policies.

However, Mike Powell, insight analyst on general insurance at financial sector information provider Defaqto, argues that this is not a fair analysis.

For instance, Britons with property in Spain or other continental European countries may want to arrange annual travel insurance to allow them to make multiple trips to their holiday home.

More than a tenth (11 per cent) of insurers provide annual policies to over-65s, Mr Powell claims, while 30 per cent provide single-trip policies.

Although this is a more restricted market, it is not a lack of competition that he suggests as being a driving force behind slightly higher premiums for older customers.

Instead, it is their greater risk of suffering an injury – perhaps due to a trip or fall – and the need to protect against that likelihood while abroad.
