Years ago now, I passed through the lovely town of Girona (or Gerona as the Spanish would have it – and, after all, they should know!) with barely a backward glance.

But, since then, a couple of things have caused me to have a rethink about this lovely town. Firstly, it is very near France – a fact that was drawn to my attention by a friend of mine who now lives there and visits it often. Being near the border opens up a number of options and interesting choices. Then, in that serendipitous way that things happen, I spoke to someone else recently who has completed a wonderful walking tour – a short one – around the town and had fallen deeply in love with it. So much so that he is thinking of buying a home here…all recently researched areas have flown out the window and his mind is made up!

If you are thinking of buying in Spain you may want to give it a look. It has a wonderful old city with Arab Baths, churches, an 11th century cathedral and a Fort. It is especially famous for its old Jewish district, which lies at the very heart of a tangle of narrow streets that make up the old city.

Access is good: there are good rail and air connections to the UK and to the rest of Spain – always good to know. It is served year round by Ryanair – also good news.

Girona is only 30 kms from the beach but, because it is not right on the seafront, it has not been overwhelmed by tourism and still retains its Spanish flavour.

And, if you should need any more persuading, Julio Iglesias is coming to serenade you there in August – how can you resist?
