“I have always been a little bit clueless about technology and now that I have made the move to Turkey it is really catching up with me. I am desperate to get my TV and internet set up so that I can watch my favourite programmes and keep in touch with friends back home. It all just seems like such a minefield. Please can you help?”

Thanks for your email about getting yourself set up in Turkey. I know it can be a bit of a nightmare but I am sure that I can help out. You’ll be pleased to hear that Turkey has wholeheartedly embraced the 21st century and things are constantly improving and evolving.

The most important things that you will need to be connected and to not feel isolated are internet, and TV.

Connection to the internet is often via Turk Telecom, the state provider, which offers a series of internet and phone packages depending on frequency of use. They can range in cost from 29TL (approx. £10) for a fixed number of hours a month up to 52TL (approx. £18) a month for unlimited hours based on signing a special two-year contract.

Once you are set up online, be sure to join Skype – a website which allows you to make free calls to people all around the world with the added benefit of seeing them face to face! Setting up Skype will minimise your home phone bill and help to keep you better connected with your loved ones.

To set up satellite TV you have a series of options. DigiTurk offer monthly packages for a limited number of English channels, as well as the movie and sport-based channels. The most popular choices at the moment are the private satellite providers who will give you Sky channels and a whole shedload of English channels, including ITV and Channel 4. The cost can be about GBP£150 for just the “Dreambox” and then an additional £100 for the year. Hope that this helps!
