British MPs don’t hold back when it comes to taking family holidays, in the UK and on the Continent. We list some of PM Cameron’s – and his former opponents’ – favourite destinations and find some ideal properties for unwinding after a general election…

David Cameron
The Cameron family appear to be big fans of the Iberian Peninsula, in particular Spain’s two famous archipelagos, the Balearic Islands and Canary Islands, as well as Portugal’s Algarve. And if they’re there this summer, the Cava will taste extra sweet after Dave’s recent election victory.

In the Balearics, the Camerons took a summer holiday in the Pollensa area of Mallorca in 2012, returning to chic Ibiza for a half-term break with their three children the following year. If they ever returned to the latter island, renting this smart seven-bedroom villa in San Carlos for a week or two would surely go down well with Sam and the kids, and whoever they had in tow. In a private, rural location and on its own large plot, it includes a pool and home cinema room.

Meanwhile, last year it was Lanzarote in the Canaries where family Cameron ventured with their three children for some chillaxing and fun in the Easter sun. They are said to have rented a villa in the Playa Blanca area, perhaps not dissimilar to this luxury four-bedroom villa, with a private pool and breathtaking sea views – and not far from the Timanfaya National Park, in case David fancied a camel ride…

Last year, Dave and Sam opted for Portugal for their summer holiday, where they were spotted browsing in a fish market in the resort of Cascais, just outside Lisbon. The previous summer, they were seen on a similar ‘shopping trip’ during their family holiday in the resort of Aljezur in the western Algarve.

Ed Miliband
Ed is known for his love of France, where he likes to relax in the tranquil countryside with Justine and their two sons – he’ll appreciate some private family time this summer, after his battering at the polls. Family Miliband holidayed across the Channel both last year and in 2013. Of course, the French countryside is awash with cosy character homes, where you can dip in and out of the local social scene as much as you want. This restored stone farmhouse in the Dordogne, with five bedrooms and a pool is a great example.

Nick Clegg
A trip to the in-laws in Spain might be in order for Nick, following his party’s dismal performance in the election. He’s married to Spaniard Miriam and they make regular visits with their three lads to her folks’ place near Valladolid, north of Madrid. For summer hols on the beach, residents in this part of Spain typically don’t head to the Costas in the east and south of the country, but either directly north to the unspoilt Asturian and Cantabrian coast, known as the Costa Verde, or west to Galicia’s coastline. This two-bedroom chalet near the Galician resort of Mino, comes with a separate guest cottage, pool, garden and is just two kilometres from the beach.
