France has emerged as the top European destination in a new quality of life index for expats.

Those buying French property as a home to live in were among the happiest with their new lifestyle in a Natwest poll, based on factors such as cost of living and health.

Only the far-flung destinations of New Zealand, Canada and Australia came ahead, meaning France is the best for those who wish to have easy access to and from the UK for themselves and relatives who may visit.

French property buyers were joined by those investing in Portugal, Spain and the USA in the top ten.

Head of NatWest International Personal Banking Dave Isley noted: "UK expats say they are living healthier lifestyles abroad, whilst also benefiting financially."

Those considering French property investments may be interested in Paris, where the last year has seen prices defy the downturn to rise by ten per cent, according to figures from the Notaire de France.
