New Zealand has been experiencing many problems due to the volcanic ash cloud that formed when the volcano, Puyehue-Cordon Caulle erupted in Peru. The cloud forced flights within New Zealand and out to Australia to be cancelled or halted.

Crowds of passengers have been left waiting for their flights to be re – scheduled as even Air New Zealand, who previously boasted about keeping flights going, were forced to halt all their scheduled flights from South Island airports because the ash cloud fell even lower.

The meteorological service for New Zealand had advised that the ash could fall as low as 3000 metres from the ground. This was going to affect flights in and out of Dunedin, Christchurch and Invercargill.

Air New Zealand was only able to resume some of its flights last week, although flights to Queenstown ski resort were still at a standstill. The airline is working closely with the Civil Aviation Authority and Airways Corporation to try and work out some safe flight paths which avoid the ash cloud.

Qantas and Jetstar cancelled all their flights; domestic and international, flying in and out of New Zealand. This included 31 domestic and 15 trans – Tasman flights.
