EU countries will be able to get Regional Development Fund aid for the creation of more green housing, the European Parliament has agreed.

A report backing the directive to provide such funding, which could help nations such as Portugal invest more in energy efficiency and renewable energy measures in housing, was approved by 629 votes to 17 in the European Parliament.

This could mean those investing in Portugal property or elsewhere in the EU could benefit from greener housing.

The Portugal property sector may already be affected by developments in renewable energy, as increasing amounts of energy in the country are being produced by new sources.

This includes the world’s first multi-unit wave farm, the Pelamis project at the Agucadoura site off the north coast.

It has a generating capacity of 2.25 MW and there are plans to add another 20MW of power to the location.
