Enjoy sightseeing when staying in property in ItalyWhen people plan a break in property in Italy, they are likely to want to visit some of the country's best-known sights, but one newspaper has suggested some alternatives to help visitors escape the crowds.

The Irish Independent offered some ideas for those visiting Venice, Rome and the ruins at Pompeii.

St Mark's Basilica in Venice attracts many people every day, but for a quieter experience, the Torcello Cathedral could be a good choice.

The newspaper commented: "St Mark's glittering mosaics are equalled by the 12th-century 'Last Judgement' in the cathedral on the now virtually deserted island of Torcello."

Meanwhile, those staying in property in Rome may be keen to visit the Vatican Museums, but the publication recommended Villa Borghese, where you have to book a timed admission and are therefore guaranteed fewer crowds.

Finally, Pompeii is one of the must-see sights for many people staying in property in Italy, however nearby Herculaneum is also worth a visit.

The town was destroyed by the same volcanic eruption as its more famous neighbour and you can see the upper storeys of many of the buildings. One of the most famous is the Villa of the Papyri, where numerous Roman scrolls were discovered.
