Britons keen to ensure that the environmental impact of their holidays is minimised could find a ferry to be an eco-friendly means of reaching property in Spain.

Ecologically aware vacation resource Greentraveller explains that ferries offer both comfort and a relatively low carbon footprint.

"If you are living fairly near a port, it makes sense just to hop on," suggests founder and chief executive Richard Hammond.

He adds that using public transport to reach property in Spain once the ferry lands on the continent is another way to improve the environmental profile of a journey.

"Some of the longer crossings – like the Brittany trip to northern Spain – you can actually sit and have a meal and look out," he adds.

When heading to northern Spain in particular, he advises holidaymakers to keep a vigilant eye on the ocean for the opportunity to see dolphins and whales, as this is one of the best places to be in with a chance of them appearing.
