It would be hard to choose a favourite place from all the delights that Portugal has to offer, but right at the top of my list has to be the exquisite Marvão.

South east of Castelo de Vide, Marvão rears up off the valley floor in the most dramatic way imaginable. The town is set high on the top of a mountain, with breathtaking 360-degree views of the valley far below. It is also notable for its impressive thirteenth century castle, and the town itself (a candidate for the World Heritage list) is one of Portugal’s most spectacular fortified villages. Nearby are the mountains of São Mamede and a Nature Conservation area.

There is a lovely pousada in Marvão, where two village houses were converted into a lovely hotel that offers beautiful panoramas from the reception rooms and certain bedrooms. Suffice it to say that when it was first opened, it was called The Eagles’ Nest Inn.

One of the reasons you may find Marvão a great place to buy property is that it is very near the Spanish border so you can easily visit both countries. If you are renting your property out, that may open up a good market for potential rental opportunities.
