Brits moving to Australia are now favouring flats and apartments over detached rural homes, according to the country’s leading property magazine.

The Australian Property Investor (API) said that the majority of Brits currently moving down under are looking for a city rather than a more relaxed country lifestyle. Many British buyers have an affinity with Australia and the Australian way of life, says the magazine, noting how many prefer to live near universities and shops, and have access to good transport systems.

A recent survey by Colliers International Research showed that British people are now the third most active foreign buyers in the state of Queensland; they held first position for four years in a row up until just a couple of years ago, but are now behind China and South Africa.

API added that the fantastic holidays foreign visitors enjoy in the country helped boost its popularity and make Australia an appealing place to live. It said: “It’s a relatively easy transition to make in terms of lifestyle, given that there is no language barrier and the cultures are in many ways similar… Our education system, land availability and business opportunities make Australia an attractive proposition for UK and other overseas investors.”
