In a Daily Telegraph article, Teresa Levonian Cole points out that the area "is the most historic place in New Zealand" – it is where Treaty of Waitangi was signed in 1840, which made the country a British colony – and contains a number of charming towns.

Among these is Russell, which she notes is situated a ten-minute ferry ride from the Bay and contains a number of historic buildings.

Meanwhile, Kerikeri is home to the 19th century Mission House – the oldest standing building in the entire country.
