Plans for Alicante’s long awaited Line 2 tram service have been halted for at least a further month due to delays in finalising contracts with the company who will manage the service. So far, only one company, the Vectalia group, have applied for the position.

Mario Flores, the regional councillor for infrastructure made the announcement on Monday and stated that although the process of finding a contractor is not his responsibility, he has been advised that the delay will be sorted shortly. He said “with a bit of luck, the line will be running in the middle of the summer”. The latest the line will be up and running will be September, as this will coincide with the start of a new term at Alicante University.

The line, which runs from the city centre to San Vicente del Raspeig, has 14 stops along the way and has cost over €230million so far. It is expected that over ten million people will use the route every year.
