The Algarve has been awarded even more blue flags, taking the total number of beaches awarded the blue flag to 74. This distinction is awarded to beaches, recognising their water quality, safety, services and cleanliness.

There is a double celebration, as three of the 74 beaches have never received the flag before, meaning they have significantly upped their game. The Algarve is now the only area in the country with this many flags.

Portugal now has a total of 271 beaches across the country that fly the blue flag, that’s 31 more than the previous year. The tourism industry will be given a much needed boost by the standard of the beaches, as they are what attracts people to the areas.

According to the president of the ABAE (European Blue Flag Association in Portugal), the current number of flags held by Portugal is the highest ever recorded in the 25 year existence of the association.

14 of Portugal’s marinas have also been awarded the famous blue flag for their impeccable standards, 4 of these marinas are in the Algarve in Lagos, Portimão, Albufeira and Vilamoura.
