One property expert has predicted that property in Spain will stay relatively affordable for some time, which could make it a good opportunity to consider buying a holiday home or retirement villa.

Freelance property journalist Marc Da-Silva says "there is plenty of supply" in a number of European countries.

In the case of property in Spain, he says homes with excellent levels of affordability can currently be found – and that this is set to continue for the foreseeable future.

Back home, economic turbulence could ultimately prove to be a driver of market activity, rather than an obstacle standing in its way.

That is because some people may find themselves out of a job but with substantial savings in the bank – which Mr Da-Silva anticipates could drive them to invest in a new home abroad.

"If the pound strengthens further against the euro then I would be very surprised if more Brits didn't consider buying overseas," he comments.
