Property in Portugal can still be reached by air despite the volcanic fallout from Iceland – if you can get to Madrid.

The continuing restrictions on air travel in the UK are just part of a wider issue, with many airports across Europe still closed.

Guidance from the Civil Aviation Authority warns that the situation may take some time to resolve, as low-level volcanic activity in Iceland is pumping more ash into the air at levels that are currently considered unsafe to fly in.

However, Spanish airline operator Iberia is still running some flights, meaning that to reach property in Portugal, you currently only need to travel overland to Madrid, some 400 miles closer than the Portuguese capital of Lisbon.

Iberia’s work to counter the disruption caused by the volcano has included running flights where possible – such as to Milan during a brief period when the airport was open.

Overground bus routes have also been laid on for passengers whose flights had to be postponed indefinitely.
