Bird lovers will be pleased to hear that the once ‘close to extinction’ Californian Condor is now breeding in the wild and numbers in the world are set to reach 400 soon.

Twenty five years ago this amazing breed of bird was on the brink of extinction; with only 27 birds left in captivity and none left in the wild. The number in the wild is set to reach 200 this year, with a further 200 living happily in captivity. A number this high hasn’t been recorded since the mid 1920s.

These beautiful birds can live up to the age of 60 years old and can be seen mainly in the Grand Canyon area of North America or in captivity in the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. The wingspan on a fully grown adult Condor can reach 9.5 feet! These birds are a great sight to experience if you are travelling around America or holidaying there as it is amazing to think how this species has clawed its way back onto the ‘safe’ list after being nearly completely eradicated from the earth.

The Californian Condor is one of nature’s miracles and continue to require support of individuals and charities alike to continue to flourish as a species.
