Expats who become estate agents are often the best people to go to for information about a local area. For anyone thinking of buying in Spain’s northern Costa Blanca, we picked the brains of a local agent there…

Who are you?
Michelle O’Brien, aged 38. I’m based in the town of Jalón. Michelle - a Costa Blanca agent

When did you start work there?
Summer 2015. I knew the company I work for as they sold me my apartment back in 2014. I’d always wanted to work for an estate agency and they happened to be advertising in 2015, so I went for an interview!

Where do you live?
In the Jalón Valley, with my husband. We prefer being inland as it has more of a Spanish feel than on the coast. And my parents live just five minutes away.

Where would you build your dream home in the Costa Blanca?
In the Jalón Valley, or inland in Jávea. We like tranquillity and wouldn’t want noisy neighbours, but would still like to be able to walk to a bar and local supermarket. Mountains are a must, wherever we are. We don’t have grand expectations, so would be happy with a one or two bed single-storey villa, with a tiny plot and no pool. We’d want something easy to maintain.

Where’s your favourite place for a family meal out?
Gemisant in Moraira or La Solana in Alcalalí. They offer great quality food at exceptionally low prices.

Favourite place for a dip in the Med?
Jávea

Favourite place for a nightcap?
At home with my hubby!

So what’s the best bit of your job?
The constant email or phone contact I have with clients. It’s both essential and enjoyable to help and assist them through the buying or selling process.

Tell us about a memorable client?
The couple that I will always remember sold and bought direct through us. At the time, I had to juggle three sets of clients and get them to the notaries on time, whilst also helping with removals. They took me for a birthday drink after we completed on the sale of their house. They are lovely people and I am glad they are still in Spain, even after downsizing.

Your top tip for people buying in 2016?
This is a must! Always go with a recommended and reputable solicitor, as this will keep your stress levels to a minimum, allowing time for you to concentrate on more enjoyable things, like choosing furniture and which supermarket sells the best wine!

Michelle works for estate agency HomeEspaña.
