For a select group of Brits caught up in the UK’s worst spell of unemployment since 1994, one solution for finding a job could be a move down under, after Australia’s most populated state created more openings for foreign workers.

The government of New South Wales (NSW), which includes Sydney, recently added pre-primary school teachers, workers in the painting trade, construction project managers and lecturers in nursing to its list of occupations eligible for sponsorship of a skilled migrant visa.

This is a break from the norm, as in the past the NSW Government has focused largely on sponsoring skilled migrant visas in the pharmaceutical, finance and IT sectors. The recently updated visa sponsorship list does includes a number of new IT roles, including chief information officer and systems administrator, and financial roles, including financial investment advisor.

NSW also offers migration sponsorship for workers in regional and rural areas: metallurgists and special class electricians are currently in demand and the government is currently inviting applications to settle in the state’s Northern Inland, Riverina, Orana and Murray regions.

Anyone emigrating to Australia should consider using a currency specialist, such as Smart Currency Exchange, to move their money for them, as these typically offer better exchange rates than the banks.
