The John F. Kennedy airport in New York certainly had love in the air this week, when over 150 turtles crossed the busy runway as part of their mating season journey.

According to Carol Bannerman of the US Department of Agriculture, the diamondback terrapins were on their way to an ideal location to lay their eggs – a nice sandy area which is the other side of Runway 4! Primarily female turtles, they made their way across the runway so they could lay their eggs for fertilisation, which has to occur in water.

JFK is surrounded by wetland areas and a bay which is the ideal breeding ground for the turtles. Following the sighting of the first turtle at around 6.45am, the Port Authority Staff were dispatched, along with the US Department of Agriculture.

Port Authority spokesman, Ron Marsico said: “This happens every year, I guess some years there is more turtle activity.” Back in 2009, JFK saw 78 turtles cross the runway in one day.

As news of the turtles’ journey spread, people began tweeting the bizarre news; within eight hours ‘@JFKTurtles’ had nearly 3,000 followers on the social networking site, Twitter.
