New flights aid access to property in PortugalAnyone planning a stay in a property in Portugal's Alentjo area will find it easier than ever before to travel to the rural region.

New weekly flights from London Heathrow to Beja will take off from May 22nd, run by Sunvil Discovery using a BMI Embraer 49-seat plane.

Turismo de Portugal has welcomed the new route, with the director of the organisation in London Filipe Silva noting that it will make the Alentjo region "easily accessible" to those planning to stay in property in Portugal.

Mr Silva commented that the area will appeal to people "in search of a unspoilt and historic destination, with unique gastronomy and wine routes".

According to the country's tourism agency, there is much to be enjoyed in the area, from medieval castles and traditional villages to Europe's largest artificial lake and a peaceful stretch of coastline.

The Alqueva Lake, which spans some 250 sq km, was just one of the bodies of water created by a system of dams in the area to provide irrigation.

Activities such as angling, canoeing and bird watching can all be enjoyed in the region.
