Streaming video to property in Portgual could be easier with a faster core networkResidents of property in Portugal could soon find their internet connections operating faster.

Portugal Telecom (PT) is working on a 100 Gbps core network, as it expects to see the majority of its traffic accounted for by streaming video in the years to come.

In order to cater for the demands this places on the infrastructure, PT is upgrading its core network to use optical electronics to carry the data.

Most recently, it has successfully demonstrated a connection operating at 100 Gbps of bandwidth and linking Lisbon with Oporto.

The two cities are located more than 300 km apart along the westerly coast of Portugal.

However, the planned expansion of PT's network will require 1,000 times that length of fibre optic – enough to wrap around the world seven and a half times.

With the infrastructure in place, the company expects to serve an extra 600,000 homes, on top of its existing one million customers.
