Canary Islands bases could increase Ryanair's passenger traffic to property in SpainProperty in Spain's island cluster the Canaries could be easier to reach for Ryanair passengers with the news the low-cost airline is planning to open three new bases there.

Two aircraft each will be based on Lanzarote, Tenerife and Gran Canaria, with 35 new routes introduced.

As a result, 112 routes to and from the islands will be operated by Ryanair, including more frequent journeys to property in Spain's tourism destinations on the neighbouring island of Fuerteventura.

Ryanair already flies to mainland Spain including Madrid, Barcelona, Malaga and Alicante.

Flights can also be booked to journey to Ibiza or Mallorca in Spain's Balearic Islands with the airline.

Michael Cawley, spokesman for Ryanair, says: "Ryanair's growth is directly attributable to the visionary initiatives of the Canary Islands' government who, in recent years, have identified low-fare access as being critical."

The new routes are due to commence in February 2011 and will carry an estimated 4.5 million passengers each year.
