New high-speed rail routes in Florida are to get federal funding, US president Barack Obama has announced.

Mr Obama revealed plans for central funding to help create a number of high-speed routes across the US, with plans for Florida involving a link between the cities of Miami and Orlando, plus a route from Orlando to Tampa Bay.

Such improvements could have a positive impact on properties in the locations affected by these new links, as they would provide those living or holidaying in them easier access to other parts of the state.

Unveiling the plans, Mr Obama said: "Imagine whisking through towns at speeds over 100 miles per hour. Walking only a few steps to public transportation," pledging that this will be the new public transport reality for those travelling between cities.

Those looking to buy Florida property ahead of such an expansion may be able to pick up more foreclosed bargains.

President Obama warned earlier this week that there will be more repossessions to come as a result of the ongoing recession.
