Property in Italy's canal city of Venice could be restored with the help of touristsProperty in Italy's unique water city of Venice could be restored by asking visitors to contribute towards the cost of the work, it has been revealed.

A chip-in approach to tourist taxation could see those who arrive into the distinctive location to contribute as little as €1 (88p) to the restoration efforts.

Reports in the Daily Telegraph suggest that all arrivals – by air, sea or rail – would be asked to pay the levy, but that it is unlikely to be a significant cost.

Alistair Rowland, director of distribution at The Co-operative Travel, notes the positive effect the decision could have on property in Italy's city of gondolas and romance.

"The attraction of Venice is the beauty of its bridges, palaces and monuments," he points out.

"If the tax is low and can cover the cost of the work, I think tourists will continue to visit," Mr Rowland adds.
