A greener route to property in Portugal could take in public transportReaching the airport by public transport could allow people heading to property in Portugal to reduce their carbon footprint.

Sean Tipton, spokesman for ABTA – The Travel Association, explains that headline figures given for the carbon cost of flying to a destination tend not to take into account the journey between the airport and the beginning or end point of the overall route.

Those who drive to and from the airport in a private car could be adding to their emissions unnecessarily – as well as leaving themselves at risk of sitting in a traffic jam as their flight departs.

By opting for public transport instead, the holiday feeling might begin a little earlier, with the carbon footprint of reaching property in Portugal reduced at the same time.

"The entire travel industry takes its environmental responsibilities very seriously – in particular its carbon emissions," says Mr Tipton, adding that newer, fuller planes help to reduce the real-terms emissions of the flights themselves.
