Holidaymakers heading to property in Spain may be concerned about the impact of their trip on the environment.

Sean Tipton, spokesman for ABTA – The Travel Association, notes the greater awareness of ecological implications of holidays at present.

He suggests that many travellers now take carbon footprints into account when choosing where to visit.

"Travel businesses have a great opportunity in making it clear where they stand," he adds.

"Consumers are aware of the impacts all types of consumerism has on the planet."

Passengers heading to property in Spain via different modes of transport can use guidance from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs to estimate their carbon emissions.

A direct flight incurs total emissions of greenhouse gases of around 160 kg for an economy-class passenger.

Travelling by Eurostar, conversely, cuts carbon emissions compared with flying by a factor of ten on some journeys, according to the rail operator.
