Business flights to property in Spain helped drive Heathrow traffic higher in AugustFlights to property in Spain and other European countries were up in August at Heathrow, reports the facility's operator BAA.

The airport group has published its latest travel figures, with Heathrow leading the recovery following subdued activity during the recession.

In July, the airport had already broken previous records, handling 6.7 million passengers at a growth rate of 3.5 per cent year-on-year.

July 18th, a Sunday, broke the previous one-day record with 232,000 people passing through Heathrow's terminals.

August did not exceed the record, but did beat previous totals for the same month in other years.

In all, 6.5 million passengers were flown in or out of Heathrow on routes leading all over the world, a 2.5 per cent increase.

Many of those flying to property in Spain or elsewhere in Europe are likely to have been business passengers, says BAA.

European traffic in particular saw a significant increase, at annual growth of 10.4 per cent.
