Portugal has been named as one of the top five countries to see a growth in popularity this year, according to sale statistics and holiday booking figures released by online travel agent sunshine.co.uk.

UK buyers looking for property in Portugal may be encouraged by the news that the country could be set to welcome more Brits.

Spain has traditionally been known as the most popular destination with consumers but Portugal offers variety of experiences, according to Cheapflights.co.uk.

A spokesperson for the flight comparison site said that the country’s bustling cities and mountainous coastline can make it hard to leave, which could be why some Britons are considering a property in Portugal.

They said: "The best way to experience Portuguese culture is to get involved. Many travellers find themselves in beautiful Algarvian villas – with the sunshine and stunning coastlines, it can often be difficult to leave."

The euro exchange rate is also gaining strength as it is now approximately £1.14 to the euro.ADNFCR-1848-ID-19633730-ADNFCR
