The Fantasporto festival is held in extremely high regard in the country and has received the Medal of Cultural Merit by the Portuguese government as well the Gold Medals of Honour of the cities of Porto and Gaia.

Founded 30 years ago by the editors of the magazine Cinema Novo, the Fantasporto festival has introduced Portuguese audiences to sci-fi cinema over the years, a genre which was not as well received 30 years ago.

The Official Competitive Section is still exclusively sci-fi/fantasy, but there are several other strands with no particular generic focus.

Attended by 10,000 people every year, previous winners of the competition include the films Braindead (1992), Se7en (1995) and Cube (1997).
