Brits who are looking forward to spending in the January sales may want to head for a holiday to a property in Florida and take advantage of the huge malls and outlet stores that the Sunshine State is known for.

In the days after Christmas, shops in the state have been enjoying higher levels of business, with the MasterCard Advisors SpendingPulse survey revealing that US retailers have seen a rise in sales of some 2.3 per cent over the festive season.

Stores such as American Eagle were among those enjoying a rise in business – which could tempt Brits to head to their holiday property in Florida for a shopping break, as such stores are not a regular feature on many UK High Streets.

Commenting on the survey, the Miami Herald noted that over the last weekend, malls and "big box stores" in southern Florida were "packed".

"Wal-Mart offered half off toys. At Sears, customers found coats for 70 per cent off while some jeans were $10. And Gap’s Old Navy brand was selling men’s and women’s jeans for $15 for the day and an email encouraged shoppers: ‘Redeem your gift cards today’", the source said.
