Many international buyers fall in love with Cyprus for its idyllic landscapes, fascinating history and charming towns and villages. The west coast, in particular, caters for all tastes and is home to some of the most beautiful and popular places on the island. Here are three of our favourite spots to buy property in Western Cyprus.

Paphos

2-bedroom stone house in Paphos

Paphos is a vast and popular region of Cyprus with several pockets of expats. The region’s coastal capital city and namesake, Paphos, has been named as the best city to live in Cyprus for seven years in a row. The city is perfect for families boasting golden sandy beaches with shallow calm waters and plenty of opportunity for water sports.

Paphos will excite the history geeks too. The region has a diverse heritage that dates back as far as the Neolithic period. Head to Paphos Archaeological Park for gems like the House of Dionysos with its beautiful Greek mosaics.

Other than Paphos town, international buyers tend to reside along the 50-kilometre stretch from the town of Peyia to the village of Pissouri. Two lovely villages to consider are Armou and Tala. Nestled among the hills, they benefit from a slightly cooler temperature but are still within easy reach of Paphos town.

Property is affordable with one-bedroom apartments starting from €50,000. If you’re looking for a do-er upper, you can find two- or three-bedroom houses for under €100,000. For something that is ready to move into, you’d need over €100,000.

Troodos Mountains

4-bedroom villa with private pool in Pano Platres, Limassol

Head inland and you’ll reach the magnificent Troodos Mountains. Brimming with quaint and peaceful villages set in some of the most beautiful nature, this area is ideal for those looking for an outdoor and active lifestyle.

Being in the mountains and at a higher altitude, temperatures are quite a bit cooler than the bigger cities and resorts. What this does mean, though, is that in the winter the area transforms into a ski resort! Most of the skiing takes place on Mount Olympus, the mountain range’s highest peak.

This dual-seasonality presents fantastic rental opportunities – rent your home out to sunseekers in the summer and ski enthusiasts in the winter! A great place to look for a property that would enable you to do this is in Troodos Village at the foot of Mount Olympus.

Also consider Agros, the main village in the Pitsilia region. It is unique in the way that it resembles an amphitheatre with red-roofed houses dotted throughout. It also has great connections to the larger cities thanks to its modern highways. If you fancy being even closer, check out Platres, a popular and larger village that is just 20-30 minutes’ drive from the city of Limassol.

Properties can be more expensive than other areas of Western Cyprus, with townhouses starting at around €250,000. Larger villas with a pool can cost over €500,000.

Akamas Peninsula

3-bedroom detached house with private pool in Peyia, Paphos

Lastly, we look at the northwesternmost point in Cyprus: the Akamas Peninsula. It is here that you will find some of the most beautiful natural attractions in Cyprus, from the legendary Baths of Aphrodite to the spectacular Avakas Gorge.

Many of the wonders of the Akamas Peninsula can only be reached on foot, making it a peaceful and tranquil place to live. The hidden and unspoilt Lara beach is one such example with vast golden sand and idyllic turquoise waters. If you’re lucky, you might spot some turtles as the beach is the home and breeding ground of the endangered Green Turtle and Hawk’s Bill Turtle.

If this sounds like your sort of place, a good town to look for property is nearby Peyia. The town is fairly small but there is plenty going on including a great selection of bars and restaurants. The town is also just 14km from Paphos and 10 minutes from the popular beach of Coral Bay.

If you’d prefer to be right in the heart of nature, consider the town of Polis. Located on the edge of the Akamas Nature Reserve and Paphos Forest, you can spend your days walking the 50-plus nature trails and observing the plethora of flora and fauna in the area. Alternatively, the quaint and relaxed fishing village of Latchi is another great option.

In Peyia and Polis, you can find small apartments for around €50,000 or townhouses from around €100,000. For your own pool, you’d need a budget of around €250,000. Latchi is a little more expensive, with apartments costing over €100,000. For a villa with a private pool, you’d be looking at closer to €500,000.
