Few countries do coastal towns like Spain does. With nearly 5,000 kilometres of coastline, property buyers are spoilt for choice when it comes to buying by the sea. Whether you’re after big city living or a traditional life where the fisherman set out before the sun rises, Spain has a beach town for you.

Each have their own quirks and stories to tell. So, to help you find your perfect seaside spot, here are three of our favourites…

San Sebastián, Northern Spain

4-bedroom villa in Asturias, Oviedo

The beautiful city of San Sebastián lies on the Bay of Biscay in northern Spain. Globally renowned for its gastronomy, San Sebastián attracts foodies from every corner of the world looking to dine in the city’s 11 Michelin starred restaurants.

Food really is at the heart of this coastal city. So much so that there are numerous food clubs and societies to join called txokos. They involve lots of cooking, drinking and socialising, and are a fantastic way to meet new people and make friends.

Unsurprisingly, there are plenty of delicious dishes to try in San Sebastián. To get you started, make sure to try Pintxos (Basque tapas), bacalao al pil pil (cod fried in olive oil until crispy) and Basque cheesecake.

Property

San Sebastián itself can be expensive, but northern Spain in general is a lot more affordable than the southern coast.

If you head slightly inland to Álava you can find two- and three-bedroom apartments for under €70,000. If you’re happy to drive a little further, the area of Asturias is truly breathtaking and is often called ‘Spain’s best kept secret’ due to its impressive landscapes, gorgeous beaches yet rather low-key status. In the capital Oviedo, you can find lovely apartments for €100,000-€150,000, and some charming villas for not much more.

San Pedro del Pinatar, Costa Cálida

2-bedroom terraced house in San Pedro del Pinatar

This small town on the Costa Cálida may just look like an ordinary fishing town at first glance, but San Pedro del Pinatar has an interesting secret: it’s home to the biggest outdoor mud therapy sight in Europe.

It is believed that the warm mud baths have therapeutic healing powers and are said to help with arthritic pain, rheumatism and broken bones. So, expect to see plenty of mud-coated people as you walk along the beach!

Property

You can get a lot for your money in San Pedro del Pinatar. Beachfront apartments start from around €70,000, and you can find central townhouses for €100,000.

Nerja, Costa del Sol

Nerja is a picturesque, whitewashed town, just 50km east of Málaga. With panoramic views of the sparkling Mediterranean, sheltered sandy coves and a dramatic mountain backdrop, it is no wonder the town has earned the nickname of “the jewel of the Costa del Sol”.

2-bedroom townhouse in Nerja, Málaga

Although a popular tourist destination, Nerja has maintained an authentic look and feel, and has escaped the high-rise developments.

But it’s not the 10 miles of beaches or pretty buildings that the town is famous for – Nerja caves are what many people come to see. Boasting the largest stalagmite in the world and stretching for nearly 5 kilometres, the caves are second to none. What’s more, during the summer they transform into a concert venue, hosting top-class musicians from all over the world.

Property

Due to its proximity to Málaga, property in Nerja is a little more expensive than the other towns we’ve mentioned. Nonetheless, you can still find affordable options. Apartments start from €100,000 and you can find townhouses and terraced houses starting at just under €200,000.
