Horse enthusiasts seeking Portugal property may be interested to know that the south-west region of the country has been recommended for an equine escape.

Santo Andre on the country’s stunning Alentejo Coast is reportedly a favourite spot for holidaymakers seeking a horse-themed getaway, which could make it an interesting proposition for anyone hoping to trot off with a Portugal property holiday rental investment.

Sampling a horse-themed holiday in Santo Andre, Alexandra Ferguson writes for the Telegraph: "The beach is deserted; virgin sand stretches north and south, and Atlantic rollers crash on the steep shore.

"The horses brave the surge […] then we are off, galloping along the sand: the horses slick with salt and sweat, the warm wind on our faces."

She adds that Santo Andre, which is located two hours south of Lisbon, is particularly suited to horse-riding, as a large proportion of the coastline remains unspoilt, having been designated a national park.
