Leonardo da Vinci’s last home before he died was a French property in Amboise.

This year is the first time the chateau has been opened up to the public as part of an exhibition to celebrate his links to the country, reports the Connexion.

Leonard de Vinci et la France will explore how the painter first came into contact with the French kings, Francois I, Louis XII and Charles VIII.

A spokeswoman from the exhibition said: "Louis XII in particular was fascinated with his painting of The Last Supper in Milan – he wanted to bring it to France but could not, so he had copies made."

Some of the artists work that he completed at the chateau – which was a gift from Francois I – includes Saint John the Baptist, the Virgin and Child with Saint Anne and the Mona Lisa.

Leonardo da Vinci’s work The Last Supper was the subject of Dan Brown’s book, The Da Vinci Code, which was later turned into a film starring Tom Hanks.
