Old time favourite of holiday homeowners, Spain’s Costa del Sol is luring back growing numbers of British buyers in 2014. The Overseas Guides Company’s online resource, Spain Buying Guide, which has an office in Cala de Mijas in the Costa del Sol, highlights some key stats and shows you why it’s still such great value for money.

Property sales in Andalusia, home to the Costa del Sol, generated a staggering €3.9 billion in the first half of 2014, helping overall home sales in Spain to rise by 31 per cent year-on-year for that period.

Figures from Spain’s Ministry of Public Works (Fomento), also showed that Andalusia is Spain’s third most valuable region in terms of property sales, after Madrid and – only just – Catalonia (which includes Barcelona).

There is more good news for homeowners who let their property in the Costa del Sol. A leading holiday rentals website has reported a 14 per cent rise in demand for Spanish holiday rental accommodation from holidaymakers from the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Portugal. This was for the period of June to September 2014. Unsurprisingly, the Costa del Sol (Andalusia) is one of the three most sought after destinations for each of these nationalities, bar Italians.

It’s not only value for money that is driving a resurgence in the Costa del Sol – mortgage rates in Spain are very attractive right now, thanks to the low base rate set by the European Central Bank and a growing hunger amongst Spanish banks to attract foreign borrowers again. Typically, qualifying borrowers can expect up to 70 per cent loan to value, with an annual interest rate of just 3.3-3.5 per cent, less if your loan is around €250,000 or above, or if you borrow less than 70 per cent.

Ready to start your house-hunt in the Costa del Sol? Here are a couple of great value properties, typical of what’s available right now – an apartment and townhouse.

This luxury two-bedroom apartment (above) combines views of the golf course, a nature reserve and the sparkling Med. In a smart complex and with all mod cons, it’s just a five-minute drive from the beach. Price: €129,900.

This charming three-bedroom townhouse (above) is on an established complex in the popular resort of Torremolinos. Highlights include a solarium and garden, and being just 15 minutes’ walk from the beach.
