Freezing Nordic winters, buoyant economies, much improved air access and a love of the Mediterranean lifestyle – is it little wonder Scandinavians are now one of the fastest growing groups of foreign buyers in Spain’s depressed property market?

Highlighting this are Swedish couple Sara Göransson and Göran Westholm, who this summer completed on a townhouse in Villamartín in the southern Costa Blanca. They paid €107,000, excluding fees and taxes, for their property, which has two bedrooms, a patio, solarium and access to communal pools and a park area.

Like many Swedes, Sara and Göran are also familiar with the Costa del Sol, but during their first trip to the Costa Blanca this year they were converted. “We’d spent the last four summers in the Costa del Sol but never the Costa Blanca,” said Sara.

“We’d been thinking about buying in Spain for a couple of years, but when we started looking we found the Costa del Sol expensive and a bit too fancy for us. So on a friend’s recommendation, we got in touch with HomeEspaña and in March visited the Orihuela Costa and loved it. We find it friendly and family oriented, and also like having transport access to bigger cities, especially as we love football – Valencia is close and even Barcelona isn’t that far.”

Sara and Göran, who live two hours west of Stockholm in Örebro, returned to the Costa Blanca in June, when they found and bought their property.

“It’s on the Valencia urbanisation, which has a nice mix of permanent residents and holiday homeowners,” continued Sara. “We have four children between us, aged 16 to 31, and one grandchild, so our place will get lots of use by all the family. Our agent at HomeEspaña, Martin, was very helpful in showing us all our options and the after sales service there has been excellent.”

Sara and Göran are next visiting their new Spanish home in October. “Getting there is relatively easy,” said Göran. “We can fly to Alicante with Ryanair from either Stockholm (Skavsta) or Västerås airports. Transfer from the airport to our property is just 40 minutes.”
