Winning Wimbledon this year has been a dream come true for Andy Murray and his British fans, but his victory is also helping to raise Spain’s profile as a global tennis destination.

As a teenager, Murray swapped rainy Scotland for a tennis academy in sunny Barcelona, where he spent a crucial couple of years training to become a pro. Further south, the Costa Blanca is equally attractive to tennis players, including those looking for a second home near world-class facilities. Here, British No.2 James Ward spent four years training at the Equelite Juan Carlos Ferrero Academy in Villena, near Alicante.

“Outstanding coaching and facilities are only half the reason Spain is one of the best places in the world to learn or play tennis,” said Kieran Byrne, MD of Costa Blanca estate agency HomeEspaña, himself a keen player. “Valencia’s balmy climate and healthy way of life help to make it an enjoyable place to be, whether you’re a pro on a serious training regime or just someone who enjoys a regular knock-around in relaxing surroundings. Being able to complement everything else the region offers, including golf and beaches, with tennis just adds to the appeal of owning property here.”

Other notable tennis academies in the Costa Blanca include the Masia Academy in Valencia, while further south the La Manga resort in Murcia has a highly regarded academy that hosts Senior Open tournaments.

La Manga has a selection of property for sale, while for properties near the Equelite Academy, HomeEspaña has a sweet three-bedroom villa in Sax with an above-ground pool for sale for €166,000, or click here to see properties in Villena.
