His victory was secured last night following on from an inconclusive first round which was held on February 17. In this initial election, no party won by a big enough a margin to secure the election.

In his victory speech, Anastasiades vowed to facilitate a swift deal with the international creditors who have been brought in to help the nation with their severe financial troubles brought on by the Greek sovereign debt crisis. The country is seeking a €17 billion bailout from the EU, International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the European Central Bank.

Following his victory, he stated: “My first priority is to reinstate Cyprus’ credibility. I’m determined to work together with our EU partners, and, at the same time, fulfil our responsibilities to the utmost. I am committed to making all the necessary measures to steer our country out of the economic crisis”.

Let’s hope he stays true to his word.
