It’s amazing how expats miss the little things in life that they took for granted in their home country. TV programmes are a perfect example.

From time to time, the OverseasGuidesCompany.com fields a question about British TV programmes – such as a recent question about how to view Doctor Who from France.

BBC iPlayer and BBC Online are only available to people inside the UK (although you can access news and other videos as well as listen to BBC Radio). Other channels may make some or all of their content available online.

In most instances, though, there are only two real options for British expats to get their fix.

Most popular programmes are on-sold to television networks in other countries, particularly English-speaking countries, so you can find out which one has the rights to your favourite programme and check to see when they will be broadcasting it.

In most instances, it will be later than when it is broadcast in the UK, so you will need to watch out for spoilers on the internet and in the press. In non-English speaking countries, you can get subtitles on your television, but the translation is not always word-perfect.

The other option is to wait until the series is released on DVD, so you can grab a copy to keep and watch it at your own leisure. This way, you can watch it on your flight back to the UK for Christmas, so you’re fully up-to-date with the plot and able to discuss your favourite scenes over turkey and mulled wine!
