Canadian Immigration Minister, Jason Kenney, has announced that the North American nation will be upping their game in order to compete more fiercely with Australia at attracting skilled workers.

Kenney, who is about to embark on a trip to London in a bid to tackle acute labour shortages, expressed his desire to recruit UK grads who are struggling to find work in recession-ridden Britain and persuade them that Canada is just as good an option as heading down under.

During his five-day trip to the capital Kenney will be meeting with key people from the British government including UK Immigration Minister, Mark Harper, in order to discuss employment options for the UK’s unemployed.

Canada is keen to recruit young, skilled migrants to fill jobs in industries such as engineering, IT and welding. In order to make themselves an attractive prospect, the country is planning to reduce the amount of time that the individual will need to work in a skilled Canadian job before qualifying for permanent residency. It is thought that the change will take effect from next January.

Kenney said: “There are a lot of young Britons who are under-employed or unemployed but are highly educated. I think so many young Britons have, for some reason, thought of Australia before Canada as a destination for immigration, and we want to be at the front of the competition for the world’s best and brightest.”

When it comes to outlining the reasons to choose Canada over their antipodean rivals, he stated that they are more attractive due to their proximity to the UK and the fact that they have the strongest economy in the G8.
