In this week’s article, FranceBuyingGuide writer and Languedoc Roussillon resident, Alexis Goldberg talks us through one of her favourite things about life in France, its proximity to Spain…

“One of the many advantages of living down in the south of France is being able to jump in the car and cross to other European countries with relative ease. The Languedoc Roussillon borders three French regions on one side and Spain, Andorra and the Mediterranean Sea on the other. From leaving home, my husband and I can be in Barcelona in three hours; a city with it all – a wealth of culture, stunning architecture and a rich and florid history”.

“The city’s most famous resident is Antoni Gaudi, a Catalan architect and major figurehead of Catalan modernism. His style is highly individual and Barcelona’s most visited attraction is his Sagrada Familia, a huge Roman Catholic Church which he tirelessly dedicated 40 years of his life to. Despite still being unfinished and surrounded by enormous cranes, tourists flock to the city purely to get a glance at this marvel of modern architecture”.

“Walking around the city, one is spoilt for choice when it comes to fascinating sites. Whether it’s the Barri Gotic (gothic quarter), La Rambla, Placa Catalunya, Ciutat Vella or Park Guell, there are things to marvel at and places to sit and people watch to your heart’s content. Beaches? Not a problem! There are over four kilometres of sandy beaches within minutes of the city”.

“Living where we do in the Languedoc Roussillon offers up so many possibilities for travel to some of the most wonderful regions of Southern Europe but Barcelona sits way up in the ranks in terms of fascination. Living in France has so much appeal and has the added bonus of being able to hop across to Spain in a heartbeat”.
