The “Seven Wonders” competition was announced at the start of the year and called for the public to vote for their favourite Portuguese beach across a number of different categories including “best urban beach” and “best wild beach”.

The Portuguese island beaches ranked high with Porto Santo near Madeira and Lagoa de Fogo in the Azores receiving accolades. Funas and Zumbujeira do Mar in the Alentejo were highly commended and prizes went to Ribeira Albufeira do Azibo in the Douro region of Portugal and Guincho Beach, located a short distance from Cascais.

It came as quite a surprise that only one beach from the Algarve region ranked in the top seven. Odeceixe in Aljezur, which is located on the west coast beyond the highly popular surfing resort of Sagres, was voted the best beach in the Algarve.

Ben Taylor, Algarve resident and writer of the PortugalBuyingGuide.com, commented on his favourite local beach: “I would have to say Praia da Rocha in Portimao. Yes, it’s in a big and brash resort, but it was the first Portuguese beach my wife and I set foot on and therefore holds a special place in our hearts.”
