The results are in and for the second year in a row, Adelaide has been voted the most liveable city in Australia.

The survey, conducted by The Property Council of Australia, surveyed 5,231 locals and asked them to judge their city on 17 different areas including design, safety, education and housing.

Here is a brief run-down of some of the key observations from the survey…

  • 1 – Adelaide

  • 3 out 4 'City of Churches' locals said that they saw their home town as an affordable place to maintain a good standard of living. The South Australian state also ranked the highest by far for their health services with 67 per cent saying that they were completely satisfied with the care received. On a less positive note, fewer than half believed that there were job opportunities to be had making them the lowest ranking mainland city for employment.

  • 2 – Canberra

  • Residents of Australia's capital city praised their road system and commended its safety and cleanliness. Concerns were expressed over the amount of quality affordable housing around and complaints made about the city's cultural scene.

  • 3 – Melbourne and Perth (tied third)

  • Although Victoria's capital frequently tops polls of the world's most liveable cities when assessed by international judges, the locals appear to have a slightly different opinion. Melbourne ranks very well for culture, architecture, health care and education but was criticised for its high property prices, its climate and its traffic.

Melburnians gave a scathing report of the State Government and demonstrated particular aversion to the imposition of high stamp-duty charges and the management of urban growth.

Perth was slammed for its lack of cultural entertainment but the locals were incredibly content with the city's climate and natural environment which lends itself to Western Australian's enviable outdoor lifestyle.

  • 5 – Brisbane

  • Brisbane was commended for its vibrant culture and its attractive city design but only one third of residents said that there was quality affordable housing to be found. Even more alarmingly, only 50 per cent of residents said that they considered the city a safe place to be.

  • 6 – Hobart

  • The Tasmanian city was praised for its appearance but unfortunately it performed poorly when it came to the assessment of education, health, employment and its economy.

  • 7 – Sydney

  • The last year has seen Sydney make the biggest jump in the liveability stakes with a large amount of residents believing that it has become more beautiful, more entertaining, cleaner and safer than 12 months ago. Unfortunately, two thirds believe the road system needs some urgent attention and that the State Government need to pull their socks up when it comes to keeping up with the overall infrastructure of the city.

  • 8 – Darwin

  • For the second year in a row, Darwin has been ranked the least liveable city in Australia with residents dubbing it unaffordable, unsafe and a bad place to be should you require healthcare. Despite this over 77 per cent said that Darwin had good employment and economic opportunities.
