The country of Jamaica has “plans” for big changes – it has stated an intention to become a republic. Newly elected Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller has pledged to change the country to a republic from a monarchy. This would involve removing the Queen Elisabeth II as head of state from the Jamaican Constitution.

Following nearly fifty years of independence from the UK, the new PM believes that Jamaica “needs to complete the circle of independence” by having its “own indigenous president”. The Queen is currently represented by a governor-general who appoints the prime minister, under the Jamaican Constitution.

Simpson Miller, who was appointed last week, says that the country needs to deepen regional integration: “We must fully repatriate our sovereignty… Let us, together, complete this aspect of regional integration within the life of this administration.”
