On December 17th in Bansko, the winter capital of the Balkan Peninsula, officially opened the new 2011/2012 ski season. Special guests at the event were the skiing legend Petar Popangelov and Bansko’s honorary citizen – Marc Girardelli.
The legend Marc Girardelli was the first to try the ski slope. The five time World Cup champion was happy with the terrain and said that he expects a lot of surprises and good results during the next few months.
”I am glad that I am here to open the competition year in Bansko. The conditions are just perfect, and I am sure that everything will be perfectly organized as usual. We expect high records during the two starts of the World Cup, which will be held in the resort”, he said. He also added that it is a real honour for Bulgaria to host competition of such rank.
In February 2012 Bansko will host a round of the Alpine Skiing World Cup for both men and women. The Men World Cup Slalom and Super Giant Slalom Race will take place on 18.02.2012 and the Women World Cup Slalom and Super Giant Slalom Race will take place a week later.

Apartments in Bansko 55% Cheaper than 3 Years Ago
With the start of the new winter season the focus of property buyers is now turning to the ski resorts in Bulgaria. However, it is not only the ski season that increases the interest to Bansko but also the extremely attractive prices of properties there. Bulgarian Properties figures reveal that the property prices in Bansko fell with 25% in 2011, which is another big reduction after the initial fall of the prices in early 2009 with around 40%.
Bulgarian Properties’ index of listing prices of apartments in Bansko shows that at present prices of apartments there are about 55% lower compared to their peak values in 2008.
In 2011 apartments in Bansko have been listed at an average price of 715 Euro/sq.m. or at an average of 42,700 Euro. For comparison, apartments have been sold at an average price of 500 Euro/sq.m. or 32,100 Euro for an apartment. This shows that there is still a difference in the listing prices and the prices at which deals are concluded but it also shows that in Bansko buyers are mainly interested in cheaper properties. In November the average listing price of the apartments in Bansko was 590 Euro/sq.m., reflecting the trend listing prices to move toward the prices of real deals.
The Bansko property market has a lot to offer in the low price range at present and all buyers looking for bargains are welcome to complete good deals this season.
